DASV: John 16
1 "I have spoken all these things to you, so that you will
not fall away.
2 They will put you out of the synagogues; yet the hour is
coming when whoever kills you will think that he is
offering service to God.
3 They will do these things, because they have not known
the Father or me.
4 But I am telling you these things, so that when the time comes,
you may remember how I told you about them. I did not say
these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I am going to him who sent me; and none of you is
asking me, 'Where are you going'?
6 But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled
your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth, it is beneficial for
you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Advocate
will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
8 When he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin,
righteousness and judgment:
9 of sin, because they do not believe in me;
10 of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will
no longer see me;
11 of judgment, because the prince of this world has been
condemned.
12 I still have many things to tell you, but you cannot handle
them now.
13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you
into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own authority;
but whatever he hears, he will speak; and he will tell you
about what is to come.
14 He will glorify me, for he will receive it from me, and will
declare it to you.
15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said
that he will receive it from me, and declare it to you.
16 A little while, and you will no longer see me; and again
a little while, and you will see me."
17 Then some of his disciples said to each other, "What does he
mean, 'A little while, and you will not see me; and again
in a little while, you will see me'; and 'because I am going
to the Father'?"
18 Then they said, "What does he mean, 'A little while'? We
don't know what he is talking about."
19 Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask him, so he said to
them, "Are you asking each other about what I said, 'A little
while, and you will not see me, and again a little while,
and you will see me'?
20 I tell you the truth, that you will weep and lament, but the
world will rejoice; you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow
will be turned to joy.
21 When a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has
come; but when she has given birth to her child, she does not
remember the suffering, because of the joy that a baby has
been born into the world.
22 But you now have sorrow; but I will see you again, then
your heart will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away
from you.
23 In that day you will not ask me anything. I tell you the
truth, if you will ask anything of the Father in my name,
he will give it to you.
24 So far you have not asked for anything in my name; ask,
and you will receive, that your joy may be made complete.
25 I have told you these things in figures of speech. The
hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in abstruse
figures, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
26 In that day you will ask in my name. I am not telling
you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;
27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved
me, and have believed that I came from the Father.
28 I came from the Father, and have come into the world;
again, I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."
29 His disciples said, "See, now you are speaking plainly
and not with abstruse figures.
30 Now we know that you know all things, and do not need
to have anyone ask you anything. Because of this we believe
that you came from God."
31 Jesus replied, "Do you now believe?
32 The hour is coming, indeed has come already, when you will
be scattered, everyone to his own place, and I will be left
alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have trouble; but take courage, I have
overcome the world."
