Obadiah
DASV: Obadiah
1 The vision of Obadiah.
This is what the sovereign LORD says concerning Edom:
"We have heard tidings from the LORD,
and a messenger has been sent among the nations:
'Rise up, let us rise up against her for battle.'
2 Look, I will make you small among the nations;
you will be greatly despised.
3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,
O you who live in the clefts of the rock,
whose home is on the heights of the mountains,
who boasts in his heart,
'Who can bring me down to the ground?'
4 Though you soar high as an eagle,
and though you set your nest among the stars,
from there I will bring you down,"
says the LORD.
5 "If thieves came to you,
if robbers by night,
O how you will be destroyed!
Would they not steal until they had enough?
If grape gatherers came to you,
would they not leave a few grapes?
6 How the descendants of Esau will be plundered!
How his hidden treasures will be searched out!
7 All your allies will drive you to your border.
Those who were at peace with you will deceive you,
and will prevail against you.
Those who ate your bread will set a trap under you,
but you will be totally unaware of it.
8 "Will I not in that day," says the LORD,
"destroy the wise men out of Edom,
and understanding out of the Mount of Esau?
9 Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be afraid,
to the end that everyone will be cut off
from the Mount of Esau by slaughter.
10 Because of the violence done to your brother Jacob,
shame will cover you,
and you will be cut off forever.
11 On the day you stood by when strangers carried off his wealth,
and foreigners entered into his gates,
and cast lots on Jerusalem,
you were just like one of them.
12 But you should not have gloated over your brother
in the day of his disaster.
You should not have rejoiced over the children of Judah
in the day of their destruction.
You should not have spoken arrogantly
on the day of distress.
13 You should not have entered into the gate of my people
in the day of their calamity.
You should not have gloated over their misfortune
in the day of their calamity.
You should not have laid hands on their substance
in the day of their calamity.
14 You should not have stood at the crossways,
to cut down those trying to escape.
You should not have handed over those who survived
in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the LORD is near on all the nations;
as you have done, it will be done to you;
your deeds will return back on your own head.
16 Just as you have drunk on my holy mountain,
so will all the nations drink continually;
they will drink, and gulp down,
and will be as though they had never been.
17 But in Mount Zion there will be those who escape,
and it will be holy;
the house of Jacob will regain its inheritance.
18 The house of Jacob will be a fire,
and the house of Joseph a flame,
but the house of Esau stubble.
They will burn them up and devour them.
There will not be a sole survivor of the house of Esau,"
for the LORD has spoken it.
19 Those of the Negev will possess the mountain of Esau,
and those of the Judean foothills the Philistines.
They will possess the lands of Ephraim,
and the lands of Samaria.
Benjamin will possess Gilead.
20 This group of exiles from the descendants of Israel,
who are among the Canaanites,
will possess all the way to Zarephath.
The captives of Jerusalem,
who are in Sepharad,
will possess the towns of the Negev.
21 Saviors will ascend Mount Zion to judge the Mount of Esau,
and the kingdom will be the LORD's.
