          DASV: Numbers 20

1 Then the whole community of Israelites arrived at the
wilderness of Zin in the first month and the people stayed
at Kadesh. There Miriam died and was buried.
2 Now there was no water for the community and they gathered
together against Moses and Aaron.
3 The people quarreled with Moses, saying, "We wish we
would have died when our brothers died before the LORD!
4 Why have you brought the community of the LORD into this
wilderness for us and our livestock to die here?
5 Why did you make us leave Egypt to bring us into this terrible
place? It is a place that has no grain, figs, vines or pomegranates;
and there is no water to drink."

6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly
to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting, and fell on their faces.
The glory of the LORD appeared to them.
7 The LORD spoke to Moses, saying,
8 "Take the wooden staff, and assemble the congregation, you and
your brother Aaron, and speak to the rock before their eyes.
Then it will pour out its water, and you will bring water out of
the rock for them and so the congregation and their livestock may
drink."

9 So Moses took the staff from before the LORD, as he commanded him.
10 Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock,
and he said to them, "Listen, you rebels; must we bring water
out of this rock for you?"
11 Then Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock twice
with his staff and water poured out. So the community drank
and their livestock too.
12 Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did
not believe in me, to show me as holy in the eyes of the
Israelites, therefore you will not bring this assembly
into the land that I am giving them."
13 These are the waters of Meribah (quarreling); because
there the Israelites quarreled with the LORD,
and he demonstrated his holiness among them.

14 Now Moses sent out messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom,
"This is what your brother Israel says: You know all the
hardships that we have been through,
15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt
a long time; and the Egyptians harshly mistreated both us
and our fathers.
16 When we cried to the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent
an angel who brought us out of Egypt. Now we are in Kadesh,
a town on the border of your territory.
17 Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through
any field or vineyard, nor will we drink any water from the wells.
We will travel staying on the King's Highway and will not
turn off it to the right or left, until we have passed
through your territory."
18 But Edom rebuffed him, "You may not pass through my territory,
or I will come out against you with the sword."
19 But the Israelites responded to him, "We will stay on the
highway; and if we or our cattle drink any of your water,
then we will pay you for it. We only want to pass through
on foot, without doing anything else."
20 But he said, "You may not pass through." Then Edom came
out against him with a large and heavily armed force.
21 Because Edom refused to give Israel passage through
his territory, Israel turned away from him.

22 So the whole congregation of Israelites journeyed from
Kadesh and came to Mount Hor.
23 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor,
by the border of the land of Edom, saying,
24 "Aaron is to be gathered to his people; for he may not
enter into the land that I have given to the Israelites,
because you both rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.
25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up on Mount Hor.
26 Strip Aaron of his priestly garments, and put them on
Eleazar his son. Then Aaron shall be gathered to his
people and die there."
27 So Moses did as the LORD commanded. They climbed up
Mount Hor in the sight of the whole community.
28 Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and put them on Eleazar
his son. So Aaron died there on the top of the mountain.
Then Moses and Eleazar came back down from the mountain.
29 When all the community saw that Aaron was dead,
the whole house of Israel wept thirty days for Aaron.
